Divergent by Veronica Roth

I actually finished reading this book late Friday night, or early Saturday morning, however you look at it. My intention for Saturday morning was to:
A) have some coffee (aka, become a human)
B) change my Facebook status to say: READ DIVERGENT! YOU'LL LOVE IT!
and C) Update the blog with the review

Unfortunately, that's not how my Saturday went at all. At 5:30am, I took my mother to the emergency room, where she stayed (and I stayed) the rest of the weekend. She's home and feeling much better now though, so no worries.

Anyway, on to the review!

We all know that the decisions we make alter the course of our lives. But what if, at age 16, you were required to make a decision that would dictate EVERYTHING for you, for the rest of your life? In Veronica Roth's debut novel "Divergent," that's exactly what main character Beatrice Prior (Tris) has to do. In the post-modern Chicago, the city is split into five factions, all who believe one virtue best defines their life, and they strive to perfect that one virtue. The factions are Abnegation (the selfless), Candor (the honest), Amity (the peaceful), Dauntless (the brave), and Erudite (the intelligent). Every year, the 16 year olds attend the Choosing Ceremony, where they will decide which faction they belong to.

After Tris's Choosing Ceremony, she spends the rest of the book as an initiate for her chosen faction, an arduous and often times terrifying journey (at least it was for me as she dragged me along with her)!

Who knows what they want to be at age 16? Heck, I'm 26 and don't know what I want to be! This book kept me hooked from beginning to end. Every time one milestone was reached, or one question was answered, there were two more that popped up.
The characters were concise, if maybe a little too pointed. Tris is relatable, and I found myself wanting to be friends with some of her friends. And the male lead, Four, well...you should find that one out for yourself. *smiles*

I've said before that a good book will leave you thinking long after you've closed the cover. This one meets that criteria with flying colors. I'm still wondered what faction I would belong in, what virtue best describes me. And in the end, I'll have to agree with Four's conclusion - which I suggest you read to find out. This book's got it all: a gripping plot, true characters, plot twists, and even a little romance. Veronica Roth is an incredibly talented writer, and I can't wait to read more from her! I'm ready to start counting down for the next in the Divergent series!

My rating:

Cheers, and Happy Reading!
