Heist Society by Ally Carter

My sis has read several of Miz Carter's Gallagher Girls books, and this new series of hers looked interesting, so I picked up a copy of Heist Society. Here's the summary from Goodreads: When Katarina Bishop was three, her parents took her on a trip to the Louvre…to case it. For her seventh birthday, Katarina and her Uncle Eddie traveled to Austria…to steal the crown jewels. When Kat turned fifteen, she planned a con of her own—scamming her way into the best boarding school in the country, determined to leave the family business behind. Unfortunately, leaving “the life” for a normal life proves harder than she’d expected.

Soon, Kat's friend and former co-conspirator, Hale, appears out of nowhere to bring Kat back into the world she tried so hard to escape. But he has a good reason: a powerful mobster has been robbed of his priceless art collection and wants to retrieve it. Only a master thief could have pulled this job, and Kat's father isn't just on the suspect list, he is the list. Caught between Interpol and a far more deadly enemy, Kat’s dad needs her help.

For Kat, there is only one solution: track down the paintings and steal them back. So what if it's a spectacularly impossible job? She's got two weeks, a teenage crew, and hopefully just enough talent to pull off the biggest heist in her family's history--and, with any luck, steal her life back along the way.

I took a step away from the genres I've been reading recently (paranormal and dystopian) to read something a little different.

What I liked: 1) Hale's antics - he was really clever and always making me laugh. 2) Kat's crew of teenage...miscreants? Hooligans? I'm laughing just thinking about them all. You can't help but want to be a part of it! 3) I love books that make the bad guys the good guys. I mean, books shouldn't technically want to make you turn to a life of crime, although Kat's not "really" stealing...but I'd like to live this book. 4) The title and the cover are both really cute! 5) I liked how light the book was. It wasn't heavy on the emotional baggage, so it made it easy to understand, and enjoy.

What I didn't like: 1) I really wanted more details. The heist was on a strict deadline so I understand why everything moved quickly, but the story felt a little rushed.

Overall thoughts: This was kind of a teenage version of Ocean's Eleven. It was a fun, quick and easy read. I've got the next book, Uncommon Criminals on my TBR list, and I am planning on reading it pretty soon. Heist Society is definitely a nice book to break up your reading list if you are reading a lot of emotionally intense books! This is a fun series to get into, and I am looking forward to reading more about Kat and her future criminal activities.

My rating: 4 shots

  8. Annie - I'm not sure if I'm going to read GG, they seem a little young for me, but my sis loves them.
Liz - There were so many instances where I thought, well, that sounds like Ocean's 11. Only...no George Clooney. LoL!
Melissa - I hope you like it!! It won't take very long to read.
JuJu - Apparently I am very picky about the pacing of a book. I've noticed that in a lot of my reviews I either say a book moved to fast or too slow. I guess I'm like Goldilocks and the book has to be "just right."
Katie - Heist Society was good, and I anticipate Uncommon Criminals to be better. I haven't gotten very far into it, because I am reading too many books at one time!!
Cameo - I know, I'll never finish my TBR list! Partially because I just keep adding to it!
Caffeinejunkie - I hope you like it when you get around to it! I know how those TBR piles get!!

Thanks for stopping by everyone! Y'all are great!
